Photo: The West Australian Former star cricketer Shoaib Akhtar has come to Indian skipper Virat Kohli’s defence, saying that aggression has been a part and parcel of competitive cricket. Kohli has come under criticism for his sledging and heated exchanges with his Australian counterpart Tim Paine during the tense second Test in Perth, which at one point needed the umpire to intervene. It was reported that Kohli belittled Paine as just "a stand-in captain", although India's team management angrily denied he said it. “Virat Kohli is one of the modern greats of the game. Aggression has been a part and parcel of competitive cricket, especially when you are playing Down Under as long as it stays in limit. Please cut him some slack,” Akhtar tweeted. Gender equality at work more than 200 years off: report

Image
The World Economic Forum (WEF) report said there had been some improvements in wage equality in 2018 compared to 2017, when the global gender gap widened for the first time in a decade GENEVA: Women may be shouting louder than ever for equal treatment and pay, but a report out Tuesday indicates it will take centuries to achieve gender parity in workplaces around the globe. The World Economic Forum (WEF) report said there had been some improvements in wage equality this year compared to 2017, when the global gender gap widened for the first time in a decade. But it warned that these were offset by declining representation of women in politics, coupled with greater inequality in their access to health and education. At current rates, the global gender gap across a range of areas will not close for another 108 years, while it is expected to take 202 years to close the workplace gap, WEF found. The Geneva-based organisation´s annual report tracked disparities between the sexes in 149 count...

Russian lawmakers back law jailing anyone urging teenagers to protest

Image
Supporters of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny shout slogans during a rally for a boycott of a March 18 presidential election in Moscow, Russia January 28, 2018-Reuters MOSCOW: Russian lawmakers approved draft legislation that would make it a jailable offense to call on teenagers to attend unauthorised street protests, a move Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny said on Tuesday was designed to frustrate his own activity. Navalny, a 42-year-old lawyer who says he wants to succeed Vladimir Putin as president, has tried to win the support of a young demographic, including teenagers, some of whom have attended his nationwide anti-Kremlin protests. Police have sometimes dispersed his rallies using force and jailed hundreds of attendees, including teenagers, whose presence has drawn sharp criticism from the Kremlin which has accused Navalny of manipulating minors for political gain. The new legislation proposes introducing fines of up to 50,000 rubles ($750) or a jail sentence of up to 15 d...

CBS ex-CEO won’t get severance after sexual misconduct claims

Image
Les Moonves had been expected to receive up to $120 million as part of a severance package that will now not materialise. Photo: AFP Les Moonves, the onetime head of CBS, was fired for cause and will not receive a severance package in the wake of sexual misconduct allegations, the television network announced Monday. Moonves, who transformed the corporation into the most watched television network in the country, was one of the most respected executives in Hollywood until he was first publicly accused. Two articles published by The New Yorker — in July and in September — detailed allegations against the 69-year-old television titan from 12 different women. He resigned in September. At the time, CBS said Moonves and the network would donate $20 million to supporting the #MeToo movement and equality for women in the workplace. CBS said a company investigation found Moonves guilty of "willful and material misfeasance," and said he refused to cooperate with the probe. He had been...

Afghanistan sends team to join Taliban peace talks in UAE

Image
An Afghan peace negotiations team has arrived in Abu Dhabi, an official said Tuesday, a day after talks attended by US and Taliban representatives were held in the city aimed at ending the 17-year conflict. The team, led by chief negotiator Abdul Salam Rahimi, "arrived in Abu Dhabi to begin proximity dialogue with the Taliban delegation and to prepare for a face-to-face meeting between the two sides", the Afghan presidential spokesman Haroon Chakhansuri tweeted. The 12-person team was first announced in November by President Ashraf Ghani as part of a diplomatic effort to bring the Taliban to the table for peace talks with the government in Kabul. But the Taliban have not confirmed a meeting, and issued a statement on Monday reiterating their long-standing vow not to speak with Afghan officials. In a new message released Tuesday the Taliban said they had held "preliminary talks" with the US State Department´s special envoy, Zalmay Khalilzad, on Monday, with the discu...
