Gwadar, Balochistan – the city even some Pakistanis had not heard of before, is finally taking center stage after the booming agreement of the Pak-China corridor. It is currently under development as a free trade port. After a 248 million USD agreement in 2007 with China, the Gwadar port was handed to China in 2013 – with the initial investment of about 750 million USD. Gwadar has the potential to acquire the status of a center piece as a gate to Strait of Hurmoz – it can compete with the UAE ports by improving the exiting links to the Caspian, thus, providing a better trade route to the land locked Caspian Region.
